The Gladiolus is a glorious flowering stalk of the iris family. While they originate from Africa, they are widely grown all over the world though must have the corms dug up and brought inside over winter before replanting in the spring. They are the birth flower for August and often associated with the 40th wedding anniversary. Gladioli represent honor and remembrance as well as strength of character. They are sometimes referred to as the sword flower with their name coming from the Latin word for sword, gladius (which is also the origin of gladiators).
